Top Tips for Caring for Your New Allison Home: Homeowner Guide
Moving to a new home is such an exciting milestone, but it’s easy to feel overwhelmed once you’ve got the keys and now have a brand-new property to maintain, especially if you’re a first-time buyer.
To help calm those new homeowner nerves, we have put together some of our top tips on how you can care for your Allison home and start your new life off on the right foot.
Head of Customer Experience at Allison Homes, Sara, said: “All of us at Allison Homes are honoured to be part of people’s homebuying journeys, and we are always on hand to support homeowners even after they’ve fully settled in. We hope that our top tips are useful to new residents and help them feel confident about how to manage their home.”
Plan ahead
Ahead of move in day, research who your gas, electric and water providers are, so you can find out the average costs and get properly set up. It’s also a good idea to reach out to the local council or look through their website, to learn how to order bins, when they are collected and how to pay council tax.
Let your home breathe
Once you’re moved in, it’s important to allow air to flow through your new home so that it can breathe and dry out successfully. For the first few months, refrain from pushing sofas and furniture against the walls, and leave a gap between hanging pictures and mirrors. Try to leave air vents, wardrobes and cupboards open too, and clean away any condensation from windowsills.
Register your white goods
To make sure your white goods and appliances are protected in the case of malfunction, register them with the manufacturer within 28 days of moving in, so that your warranty can be activated.
Trial your heating
Test the central heating and hot water system in your new home as early as possible, to ensure everything is working correctly. Now is also a good opportunity to programme your thermostat, so your home can be heated at all the right times.
Set a reminder
Set a reminder for your first-year anniversary in your new home, to make sure you don’t forget to carry out your annual service. Boiler and cylinder servicing is part of your homeowner maintenance, and without an annual service your warranty for year two becomes invalid.
Help your garden grow
For first-time buyers especially, tending to a new garden can feel daunting. Start by watering your grass regularly to ensure the roots are bedding and keep the lawn aerated to prevent water logging. Aeration involves poking small, long holes into the ground to provide the soil with good air circulation and improve the roots’ water consumption, and can be achieved by using a type of aerator, a tool which punches holes into the lawn, such as a pitchfork.
