Building careers in Devon: Allison Homes South West celebrates National Apprenticeship Week
To mark National Apprenticeship Week (10-16th February), Allison Homes South West is spotlighting the success of its apprentice Seth Reed, who is helping build the future of construction in Devon.
Seth, 18, from Taunton, joined Allison Homes in September 2023 and will complete his studies this summer. As Property Maintenance Operator Apprentice, he has been developing comprehensive skills in building maintenance and honing on-the-job skills such as customer service.
Construction runs in the family for Seth, whose father also works in the industry, making his journey into the industry even more meaningful.
Seth shares his experience: “The apprenticeship has been a hugely valuable experience for me, both rewarding and challenging. After completing my GCSEs, I knew I wanted to pursue a practical career, something I never would’ve been able to do if I continued at Sixth Form.
“The team at Allison Homes has supported me and I’ve been able to learn a range of skills – I’ve particularly enjoyed woodwork. It’s been great learning the craft which has allowed me to improve my problem-solving abilities.
“The best thing has been meeting with customers and talking to them. I feel like my interpersonal skills have greatly improved over the last year and a half – getting out and meeting people and seeing their excitement as they prepare to move into their new home is my favourite thing to do.
”To anyone thinking about applying for an apprenticeship, I’d say go for it! The skills I’ve learned have been invaluable for my future career.”
Steve Fowler, Managing Director of Allison Homes South West said: “We’re proud to be nurturing the next generation of construction professionals through our apprenticeship programme. Seth’s journey demonstrates the value of practical, hands-on learning combined with formal education.”
“Our apprenticeship scheme not only helps address the skills gap in construction but also creates meaningful career opportunities for young people in Devon. We’re committed to continuing to invest in apprenticeships as they are vital to the future of our industry and our region’s growth.”
