Allison Homes South West partners with mental health wellbeing charity

South West housebuilder Allison Homes has partnered with the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity (Lighthouse Club) to participate in its Help Inside the Hard Hat on Site campaign.

The Lighthouse Club is the only charity dedicated to the emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing of construction workers and their families across the UK and Ireland.

Amidst the pandemic and present cost-of-living-crisis, many working within the construction industry may find it difficult to manage the challenges and pressures of day-to-day construction work. Recognising this, Allison Homes has partnered with the Lighthouse Club to ensure the correct procedures and protocols are set in place to prevent mental health problems and support those in need.

The Help Inside the Hard Hat on Site campaign reaches out to construction companies, frontline traders, builder merchants and more to raise awareness about the important support services the charity provides. The charity arranges site visits with companies across the UK and Ireland to offer further insight into why it is so crucial for mental health awareness to be addressed within the construction industry.

Construction is reported to be the industry with the highest level of death rate, where it made up for nearly 27% of the total UK workplace deaths in 2021. Within the industry, suicide is a higher cause of death than accidents or falls due to the pressures of construction work.

Commenting on the impact of mental health in construction, Michele Jones, Head of Sales for Allison Homes South West said: “We’re excited to partner with the Lighthouse Club on such an important campaign. We have arranged a series of visits from the Help Inside the Hard Hat on Site team at our sites across the UK including our South West region.

“Construction is typically a male-dominated industry where discourse around emotions is uncommon. To address this vital subject, we are delighted to have teamed up with the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity to ensure our colleagues and their families have access to the necessary resources for mental support.”

Commenting further on this Bill Hill, CEO of the Lighthouse Club said: “We’re delighted to be working with Allison Homes to help raise awareness of the support available and the Help Inside the Hard Hat on Site team have been incredibly well received so far.

“We made a conscious decision to ensure that our team are from the trades, and they are able to share their lived experiences with poor mental health in a down to earth and relatable way. We are encouraging those in construction check the tour diary and book in a site visit. It’s more important than ever that we get out in front of the mental health crisis.”
