Make a statement in the bedroom and choose a bed that reflects your style
Of all the rooms in a home, the master bedroom is the most personal. It is where people tend to keep their most treasured possessions, and it is also often the room that reflects the home owner’s personality more than any other. The focal point of any bedroom is, of course, the bed.
When buying a bed, it is imperative to choose one that is comfortable, with a mattress that is right for you (and anyone you share a bed with). There are a number of mattress-buying guides online. This is not one of them. Instead, we are concerning ourselves with the beautiful part – the bed frame. Whether you want to inject character, colour or elegance into your bedroom – we have inspiration and advice.
Divan beds or bed frames?
Divan beds have come in and out of fashion over the years, but they have always remained a solid choice for most people when buying a bed, and it is easy to see why. They tend to have the same dimensions as your mattress, so they take up less space than a frame. They come with storage built into the base, which is a great space to keep bed linen and other items. They can provide extra support while you sleep as they have firm padded tops and if you like to be higher up, they are typically taller than bed frames. There is also the option to change headboards without changing the whole bed, so you do not need to commit to one look for as long as you intend to keep the bed.
Bed frames are usually lower than divans, making it easier to get in and out of bed. They come in a variety of different materials and, generally speaking, have a more classic look than divan beds. But, do you choose metal, wood, leather or fabric?
Metal
Stylish and versatile, metal bed frames can be simple or ornate, modern or traditional. With a range of finishes, they can bring elegance or an industrial edge to your bedroom. A tough, solid and sturdy metal bed frame can be softened with feminine bed linen and accessories – hard and soft contrasts always look visually striking in a bedroom.
Wood
A classic choice for a reason, a wooden bed frame brings warmth and texture to a bedroom. Because of differences in the wood grain and the occurrence of knots, every wooden bed frame is unique and provides a link to nature which is pleasing. Wood can be sanded and stained or painted, so potentially one frame can enjoy a new lease of life. And for the environmentally conscious, wooden bed frames are the easiest to recycle or repurpose. There are several different types of wood that lend themselves to rustic or sophisticated bed frames. For ornate carvings we like mahogany, and walnut for its beautiful dark brown colour and smooth finish.
Leather
Luxury is the word that comes to mind. Leather bed frames certainly look the part. This material is particularly suited to high-back sleigh beds, but can also work well for a headboard if you opt for a divan. For a more affordable, man-made alternative, you could look at faux leather. As well as its price tag and origins, it also recommends itself by being durable and easy to wipe clean.
Fabric
Fabric bed frames are the ultimate in comfort, with many fitted with a deep, padded headboard. Perfect for you if you spend a lot of time sat up in bed, they bring added warmth to a bedroom with their soft texture. Fabric bed frames are also probably the easiest material to make a style statement with, as they come in so many beautiful colours and fabrics.
