Marking Armed Forces Day with tribute to Cotgrave soldier
To mark Armed Forces Day, we’re sharing the story behind the name of our Hayes View development in Cotgrave, which honours decorated First World War soldier Corporal Ernest Hayes.
Armed Forces Day takes place on Saturday 27th June and provides an opportunity for communities across the UK to show their support for the Armed Forces community, including currently serving personnel, veterans, cadets and Service families.
Hayes View has been named in tribute to Corporal Ernest Hayes, who was born in the Nottinghamshire town of Cotgrave in 1898 and went on to serve during the First World War.
Corporal Hayes served with the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and was awarded the Military Medal three times for his gallantry on the Western Front in 1918. Of the 115,600 servicemen awarded the Military Medal, only 180 received it three times, making his story a remarkable part of Cotgrave’s local history.
The development name also pays tribute to Ernest’s older brother, John Hayes, who was killed during the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
As communities across the country reflect on the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community, we’re proud that Hayes View will help keep the Hayes brothers’ story alive for future generations.
Karl Edwards, Managing Director at Allison Homes East Midlands, said: “Armed Forces Day is an important opportunity to show support for those who have served, continue to serve and uphold the Armed Forces community.
“At Hayes View, we’re incredibly proud that the development name honours Corporal Ernest Hayes and also recognises his brother, John. Their story is an important part of Cotgrave’s history, and we hope the name will help ensure their legacy continues to be remembered within the local community.
“Cotgrave is a town with a strong sense of heritage and community, so it felt fitting that this new development should carry a name with such local significance.”
Hayes View will deliver a collection of 45 energy efficient homes, thoughtfully designed to provide modern comfort while recognising the heritage of the surrounding town.
