First street handed over at Post Hill as new affordable homes help tackle Devon’s housing crisis
A street of twenty-five new affordable homes has been completed in Tiverton, helping to meet growing local demand and provide much-needed housing for the community.
With Devon County Council highlighting a shortage of social rented homes across the county, this delivery marks a positive step forward for the area.
Allison Homes South West and LiveWest have partnered to deliver 70 high-quality affordable homes at Post Hill. Once finished, the site will offer a mix of one to four-bedroom properties, including homes for social rent and new housing options for local people, as families and individuals begin settling into this growing community.
This handover represents a major step forward for the wider Post Hill scheme, where all remaining homes across the site have now been topped out, demonstrating continued progress towards the completion of the development.
The development represents a significant contribution from LiveWest in addressing housing need in Tiverton and across Mid Devon and follows on from the housing association’s successful delivery of 22 homes at Tumbling Fields, earlier this year.
Post Hill also forms part of Allison Homes’ wider commitment to affordable housing following the launch of its Partnerships division in 2024. The site sits within a five-year programme to deliver 5,000 affordable homes across the South West, helping to address persistent affordability pressures throughout the region.
Glyn Mabey, Managing Director of Allison Homes South West, said: “We are delighted to hand over the first completed street to LiveWest. Seeing the majority of these homes already occupied, with the final five now ready to provide affordable rental opportunities, is a proud milestone for everyone involved.
“This handover highlights the strength of our partnership working with LiveWest and our shared commitment to delivering much-needed, high-quality affordable homes for local people – it’s really exciting to see this new community taking shape.”
Gareth Jones, Development Director at LiveWest, commented: “Reaching the completion of the first homes at Post Hill is a significant milestone, and we’re delighted to see this new community coming together.
“These high-quality, energy-efficient homes will provide much-needed housing, giving local people greater choice and the opportunity to stay close to the places and communities that matter most to them.
“We’re proud to be delivering homes that are not only affordable, but designed to support strong, sustainable communities – whether helping local families take their first step onto the property ladder or providing a safe, warm and secure home to rent. Each property has been built to a high standard, and we are delighted to welcome our new customers to this growing neighbourhood.”
Councillor Jane Lock, Cabinet Member for Housing, Assets and Property Services at Mid Devon District Council, said: “One of this council’s top priorities is to provide more affordable homes for our communities and we are always looking at different ways to help address the housing shortage in the district.
“By working with LiveWest and Allison Homes at an early stage we were able to provide land for the development, supporting our partners to deliver much needed affordable homes for local people. I am delighted the first houses will soon become homes to local people.”
The development has benefited from grant funding by Homes England, the Government’s housing and regeneration agency.
Shahi Islam, Director of Affordable Housing Grants for Homes England, said: “As the Government’s housing and regeneration agency, increasing the supply of quality affordable homes remains one of our key objectives and we are committed to supporting LiveWest to achieve its ambitions.
“Post Hill is a prime example of how we are working collaboratively with partners, through the Affordable Homes Programme, to create places people can be proud to call home.”
Post Hill has been designed to create a sustainable and welcoming community, with all properties achieving a minimum EPC B-86, helping to reduce energy consumption and lower household running costs. Homes are heated by air source heat pumps, supporting the transition to low-carbon living, with a large number of homes benefitting from EV charging points, encouraging sustainable travel alongside improved pedestrian routes to local bus services.
Allison Homes South West is currently building new homes at High Moor View in Winkleigh, where homes are now almost 75% sold. The team is also delivering further affordable homes at its Partnership site in Witheridge, North Devon.
